What was mispronounced? Optional: help us by adding the time

After a spectacular run-up in Bitcoin in the past 18 months, some investors have concluded that the future of the cryptocurrency was bleak. But when the future of any industry is at stake, an underdog tends to grab the spotlight.

By contrast, Lukki, the Russian cryptocurrency exchange, has returned to its small but growing list of fans: Canada’s biggest bank announced it had begun promoting Lukki to its Canadian customers.

A common enough idea in a world that many banks have gone virtual, the effort is the first foray into cryptocurrencies for RBC, which has instead preferred to focus on trading forex.

The Canadian unit of RBC is now the fifth largest shareholder in Lukki, a Russian business launched in 2017 by a group of investors including the Konstantinov brothers — prominent Russian businesspeople.

Though Lukki attracted $300m in orders within hours of its March debut on Nasdaq’s blockchain platform, the exchange itself has since struggled to find buyers.

That could change now. After RBC’s announcement last week, some 50,000 Canadian investors (pdf) are trading Luka, according to Nasdaq’s ruble-tracking platform. And the app, which launched at the end of May, is free to use. Investors in Canada can trade up to 10 units of Lukki.

Luka is one of a few currencies that have followed the more traditional path of using blockchain technology to create their own distributed ledger, rather than rely on existing platforms — like bitcoin, for example — to store their information. But despite using such technology to clone existing services, the Lukki exchange has no intention of becoming a bitcoin clone or a bitcoin miner. Instead, the company wants to disrupt the trusty model of companies that trade under names like Marek, and guarantees transparent prices for buyers and sellers.

Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have been deeply in the news this year, often for the wrong reasons. But while its popularity has surged, currency watchers warn that its problems may also make it vulnerable to a crash.

For now, the bitcoin boom has been generating a constant stream of warning signs. Economic consequences depend on supply and demand, but not on excess supply, which the cryptocurrency industry could soon face. There are also concerns that bitcoin developers are not solving the technical challenges that made Bitcoin possible — like not having to verify transactions through an intermediary.

The Lukki exchange, though, aims to avoid at all costs — including being completely transparent — the problems bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies currently grapple with. “We are not planning to be in the business of pretending that some new technology is going to make money,” says Taras Senak, a vice-president of Lukki. “We think that . . . this is not the best time for these kinds of efforts.”

The company takes two-and-a-half hours to process a trade, and customers also get immediate payment. “Even if we are doing it right at the start, we are working on speeding this up.”

Luka is the primary currency of Lukki LLC, where investors can invest and exchange tens of millions of rubles among themselves. The exchange includes over 4,000 contracts, which allows, for example, users to trade a Lukki contract for a wager with one of their buddies who is using Lukki for the first time.

On each trade, the more someone invests, the greater their bet will be.

The backers behind Lukki include a number of Russian billionaires, including Alexei Kuznetsov, deputy chair of the board of Lukoil, the state-owned energy group. Andrei Arciniega, a board member of Lukoil and the Russian Direct Investment Fund, invested $400,000 in Lukki in 2018, according to the exchange.

Alexander Lukin of Lazarad Group, an investment firm that oversees around $1bn in capital, has also invested several million rubles, according to Lukki, and the venture group, Nikolay Senukovich and Alexander Casparyev, invested $1.7m, according to public records.
